Because of this, it makes the book hard to understand at time, especially because there are no real conclusions to any of the stories. It was interesting to read a book that was structured differently than most books, but it is not really my thing
Character Development: The characters in the book all develop around each other, because they all live in the same small town. They also develop in very similar ways, like having to overcome a challenge having to do with family. Each story tends to go back in time recollecting a memory, and then explaining how it was overcome in the present.
Central Conflict: The central conflict in the book is man vs. emotion. Many times the characters are forced to reconcile with their pasts, and getting over the feeling of sadness, anger, jealousy, or shame.
Theme: The main theme in the book is shown right in the title, which is that anything is possible. In every story, there was no real conclusion, but there was an obstacle that was overcome showing them that anything is possible. Another theme is that you can never fully know another person’s life, and all of their secrets.
Symbols, Motifs, and other Literary Devices: The first symbol to appear in the book, is when Pete is hitting a literal sign. When Pete is seen hitting the sign out of anger and rage in a childlike way, that action is a symbol of all of the pent up feelings inside he has had since he was a child, but was never able to release. Another symbol in the book is sex. It is a symbol of confidence, and pride, for some characters, but an act of shame, or embarrassment.
Meaningful Quotes: “And if such a gift could come to him at such a time, then anything- dear girl from Rockford dressed up for her meeting, rushing above the rock river- he opened his eyes, and yes, there it was, the perfect knowledge: Anything was possible for anyone.” This is the last sentence in the book, and it concludes not just the last chapter, but all of the previous chapters as well. It gives the insight that anything is possible. Another quote that is important to the story, is “He saw the boy- the man -hit the sign again and again with what seemed to be increasing force…” this quote shows how Pete’s childhood is, allowing us to gain better knowledge of what he and his siblings must have gone through to hold so much anger in them.
Critique of the book: I would not really recommend reading this book to anyone, only because the stories presented seem unorganized, and can be hard to follow. Overall, I enjoyed the book, but in my opinion it would have been better if some things were more clear....more
