The book that I read was Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead. The genre of this book is fiction, fantasy, and romance. This book takes place in St. Vladimir's Academy. In this story, Lissa and Rose are trying to figure out a threat looming over while dealing with old and new friends and boyfriends. There are three main characters in this story; Vasilisa Dragomir, Rose Hathaway, and Dimitri Belikov. Vasilisa also was known as Lissa is the moroi princess who is the only one left in her family. She is very shy and quiet. She can get very outspoken when she needs too. Rose Hathaway, a rebellious, short-tempered, spitfire who is outspoken. Rose can get serious when she needs to and is very protective of Lissa. Dimitri Belikov is a very serious man. He is very strong and mysterious. Dimitri is the best fighter there is and great guardian. Lissa and Rose are trying to figure out the threat looming and have to deal with old boyfriends, old friends, and new friends.

A theme in this book that is very present is someone bullies Rose to influence the use of power. Some examples from the book help explain that. One example is, “There was a fox on the pillow… Aside from the fact that its throat had been slit.” Another is, “Suddenly, she screamed and threw it down. Books and shoes spilled out. So did a dead dove.” These both really help show the theme because Lissa is special and something draws her to heal the dead. It’s the biggest temptation for her and a very big struggle. One quote that is significant to the text is, “And don’t ever do it again. If you do they’ll find out. They’ll try to find you.” In the book, this is very vital to the story. When you’re reading this is what the whole book is focused around and there are events that are happening that all lead back to this one quote. This quote is significant and important because it will help give you a little clip but not give it all away.

Some things I really liked in this book were the romance and the mystery. A quote that shows the romance is, “ She grinned, taking my interest in Dimitri as interest in the mall.” It is very good and I personally like romance and read a lot so this is a very good book to read. Another quote is, ”Go back to your dorm, Rose. There are bad things out here. You never know what’s following you.” This shows mystery which is also one of my favorite genre of mine. The book has multiple genres most people would like and it was a great read. Some things this book could improve on was explaining the paranormal stuff better for example, what is a Moroi? One other thing is, I don’t like that Damion won’t date Rose just because of their age difference.
This book isn’t that hard to understand but there are some things that are difficult to understand, for example, the paranormal things. I would recommend this book because it has a variety of genres that are really thought out and well put together. It will also keep you hooked. There is a whole series on it and I’m already on the second book. If you like this book you can read others in the series like it; Shadow Kissed, Blood Promise, and Last Sacrifice.
