“I guess I always thought,” Ivy said softly, “that if I was strong enough, if I was formidable enough, if I was successful enough—I could be enough. For you. I thought that if I became this person who could take on the world, then I could take care of you.” She shook her head—at her past self, maybe, or to snap herself out of it. “When I came to Montana that summer, Tess, I thought I was ready. I really did. I was going to give you everything. But Gramps called me out, and he was right, Tessie. I wasn’t doing it for you. You were thriving. You were happy. And I . . .” The words got caught in her throat, but she forced them out. “I was your sister. I was never going to be strong enough or successful enough. There was never going to be a right time to tell you. You were happy. And you deserved to be happy.”

“...Where does she get her supplies?"
Winston held his gaze. Blinked. Licked his lips. Opened his mouth. Hesitated. Swallowed. Coughed. Finally responded, "The hardware store?"
"The hardware store?"
"Yes." Winston's head bobbed. "That's where she gets her stuff."
"Is that code for something?"
"No? Just the hardware store."
... "Any specific hardware store?" Asked Adrian.
"Hmmm." Winston seemed to consider this. Then, "Nope. She likes them all.”

“Don't you think this has gone on long enough?"
I looked up from my book. Leon was standing in the doorway, leaning against the frame.
It was Thursday night, and although my sickness-or aftereffect-was gone, I still refused to join the land of the living...I was better off indoors.
"You're interrupting my reading." I regarded Leon suspiciously. He hadn't spent any time yelling at me since Friday, but that didn't mean he wasn't about to start again.
"Get up," he said. "We're going out."
"I'm not going out," I protested, faking a cough. "I'm sick."
"You're better."...
"It's going to rain. Or snow. Or both. You never know with Minnesota. We could wander right into a blizzard." ...
"Fine, but I'm still not going anywhere. It's the middle of the night."
"It's eight."
"I'm in my pajamas”

“Audrey, how exactly have yo been entertaining?"
"Um... I gave Mickey a reading."
"I thought we were sticking with Wyle," he said.
"Mickey is less threatening," I told him. "My mom's a little vulnerable right now. She turns forty next month."
She sounded strangled. "Audrey. Room. Now."
Oh well. I already had a talk in store. I gave her a quick salute, then leaned in close to whisper. "Be careful, Mom. He's totally on to you.”

“How can you guys do this?” Cotton paces back and forth. “How can you act like everything is okay when these people are doing everything they can to break us? Haven’t you noticed things have gotten worse since the ocean race started? Every single day, worse! Sometimes I don’t even know if they want us to survive at all.”
Braun stands up, walks over to Cotton, and puts a hand on his shoulder. “It’s okay,” he says. “I understand. You’re from Minnesota. I’d be angry, too, if my team hadn’t gone to the Super Bowl since the seventies.”
Cotton jerks back but smiles despite himself. “I’m from Pittsburgh, dick.”
“Jesus H. Christ,” Guy pipes in. “The Steelers are the worst.”
“You want to say that to my face?” Cotton says.
Guy cracks his knuckles absently. “Think I just did.”
