While Normal People still holds a special place in my heart, Beautiful World, Where Are You does indeed come in a close second. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I find Rooney's characters comforting. That may make me sound slightly insane, but I think she has such a way with words that even when I find myself disliking a character's personality or actions, I find that she writes flaws in such a beautiful way I cannot help but go, "Oh shit, maybe that's me, too." While of course some things I cannot relate to (for instance, Felix being an absolute dipshit in this book sometimes, I still haven't quite found fondness for him), I find Sally Rooney's writing at least makes me want to try.
This book is, in my opinion, a profound take on a lot of questions facing both normal and celebrities in today's societies, and leaves me wishing Sally Rooney had a blog simply talking about the most mundane things. I would definitely recommend this book if you can get past the lack of quotation marks, though in a way I feel like that makes the story more fluid and real, too....more
