With only little experience reading this type of theological / philosophical discussion, I have a pen handy and the pages are cluttered with underlining and margin notes. One note, what is the difference between the person and individual. The author covered it, but I have to admit, apparently it went right over my head. I will have to review that later.

The author, Fr. Brian Mullady, O.P, S.T.D (Dominican Order of Preachers, and Doctorate in Spiritual Theology), is a gifted scholar and teacher If first heard some of his lectures on this topic - Christian Social Order - on EWTN - so I decided to get the book. It is very enlivening. What it exposes is the fundamental gap in my knowledge about the role of faith and theology in shaping society and culture. Unfortunately, due to current ideological pedagogy, the role of religion is side lined. And I have to admit, most high school kids and some college students might have trouble with this text. However, under a gifted professor, such as Mullady, this would be an engaging topic for a course. The fundamental question is - how did Christian society develop so that is fundamentally different than Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, or Buddhist societies. And, here is in part, the reason. When people try to argue (and they argue from willful ignorance) that religion had no role in shaping Western Culture, then the question is, why are those cultures for different? It gets down to religion and how it shapes man's view of the divine, the universal, to each other, to society at large, and the role of the moral and natural law. Fascinating.

The book can be dense at times, as Mullady moves easily between topics such as the common good, and relationships between citizens and rulers, and the nature of the conscience. But it is worth the time to engage with the book. This is one of those books which will require a second or third reading. Right now I am trying to let it sink in and continue to underline and make margin notes. I look forward to finishing it this month. ...more "
