The main character of The Glass Castle is Jeannette. She is very adventurous and seems to have a lot of fun running around exploring with her brother Brian. I think we would be good friends, because I like doing the same things as Jeannette. When I was younger I liked to collect different rocks, just like Jeannette does. SHe likes the ones that have crystals in them, and I used to always look for quartz. Jeannette also likes going off with her brother in the dessert and having a good time, I used to like doing things like that as well.She can easily find something to do with almost nothing, and I am the same way. So I think we would get along well together.
If we were the same age, we could probably find a lot of things to fill our time and could be really good friends. Unfortunatly,since her family moves around so much, it would be hard to stay in touch with her and continue our friendship. If I knew her now, since she moves around so much, she probably wouldnt have a phone or a computer for us to stay connceted and I would never know where she was. We would never get to see each other, because her family could easily be in Phoenix one day and West Virginia the next. Therefore, the friendship wouldn't last long.

Prompt #1
The Glass Castle shows the dynamics of a dysfunctinal family who struggle constantly with being poor. All four kids are extremely bright as well as their parents. It seems like the parents both have the potential to find good jobs. The mother has the ability to find a good teaching job and she has a degree, but still often refuses to work whenever they move. And their father can hardly keep a job for more than a few months, because of his strong opinions, and unwillingness to work for success. It seems like the family is very capable of having a nice life, but the parents aren't willing to work for it. In the beginning, while living in the desert, the father believes they will find gold then strike rich. He doesnt understand the concept of working a lower ranked job and working up to something better.
I think the Walls family shows a lot about the culture of poverty. They have the ability, but their unique value system stops them from prospering. You can use the Walls family as an example that many poor people may have the ability to get out of poverty, but there is a disconnect with how to achieve this. Everyone is capable of finding a job, or go on welfare and find someway to support themselves, so they don't find themselves like the Walls family. These oppertunities come at the Walls family, but the parents dismiss them, claiming they dont accept chairity or they'll never get rich working in such a degrading position. Even the kids try to make changes and help the family, but the parents are unwilling. ...more "
