Mathis defines “habits of grace” as ways for believers to put themselves in the path of Christ to experience his grace, presence, and character. The habits themselves are not the means or the reason we receive God’s grace & salvation, that has already been granted to us through Christ’s sacrifice and our simple faith in and submission to him. These habits are merely ways for us to experience more deeply and directly the grace that God is already pouring out to us.

This book is organized thoughtfully and intentionally. It’s divided into three sections, each of which explores a different category of receiving God’s grace—hearing his voice (Bible reading), having his ear (prayer), and belonging to his body (fellowship & community). Each section is then divided into chapters that each explore a different habit, and each chapter breaks down the habit by defining and explaining its spiritual benefits within the context of the Bible, and by providing suggestions for how to implement it into your daily, weekly, or yearly routine.

Some of these habits are classic, I-already-know-this kind of stuff, like reading your Bible or praying, but Mathis reinvigorates them by reminding us of what a blessing they are and how vital they are for spiritual growth. But he also brings up habits that are less talked about or not traditionally thought of as “spiritual disciplines,” like fasting, worship, and rebuke, which reveal new ways to connect with God and helped me understand these concepts from a deeper, more Biblical perspective.

I absolutely loved reading this book and highly recommend it to anyone looking to deepen their personal relationship with God or simply learn more about traditional Christian practices. If you can read it with a small group of friends, do it!! ...more "
