Enrique had been raised in Honduras with his little sister and mmother. When he was about seven years old his mother left for work in the united states. I have learned much about the hondurian culture throguhout reading this novel. I have learned how different life is for Enrique than myself. We worry about meaningless problems whi;e he struggled with drug abuse and poverty. I hsave learned how difficult life was for a young child in Honnduras. the constant struggle of fedding and providing for your families was a main porblem throguhout the country. Because of this poverty, many parents decided to look for work in "el norte' (the north) towards mexico and the united states. MAny children were forever left alone because their parents were unable to come back to them in Honduras. The horrible poverty and seemingly abandonment is still a continuing probblem in Honduras and plagues the entire country.

Throughout Enriques journey he wwas forced through pain and violence in Mexico. His travels throguh mexico clearly show the horrible aspects of this culture right now. The rival gangs and drug cartels are the leadinig causes of violence in all of teh areas that enrique was forced to travel through. this shows the danger and uncertainity in mexico. The migrant workers and children looking for their parents were always the subject of abuse to the mexicans. MAny times over enrique was beaten with bats, fists and sometimes even machetes. This experience shows the faults in mexico and reminds us of the benefits and luxuries that we have in the united states. Enrique was always living under constant hunger and fear and this haunted him throguhout his life.

The book "Enriques Journey" is similar to the book "the Great Gatsby" that we read earlier this year. The books both incorporate a dream that the main characters strive to achieve. In "The Great Gatsby" Jay Gatsby tries to achieve his American Dream by living with wealth and with the love of his life Daisy Buchanan. His need to achieve this lifestyle led to his ultimate downfall and death. SImilarily, in "Enriques Journey" Enrique strives to get one thing in his life-a chance to see his mother once again. He traveled throughout Mexico, Honduras, and the United States in order to achieve this dream. Enrique was able to achieve this goal bcause of adaptation. He could adapt to the different countries that he traveled to and this enabled him to make his way to the United States. However, Jay Gatsby was unable to achieve this goal because he could adapt his life. He was able to change his life and thus his death followed. ...more "
