I picked up this book because it covered a certain time and a certain scene that I wanted to find more about. The book is massive, truly massive, and this must have been mastodontic work of several years of research and interviews. That said, I found myself skipping several chapters that talked about bands I have no interest in and that´s really the strength of this book. You don´t need to read it cover to cover. By skipping chapters you only miss on information on certain bands, but close to nothing on the complete picture.
Having such an amount of information as well as interviews, it´s inevitable that some things sound repetitive and after starting to read this book page after page it started tiring me out. That´s when I decided to read only about the bands I´m interested in or curious about and that made my journey through this book much more enjoyable.
I love all the little details and anecdotes you can find in the book and I find that it may have enhanced my love for certain bands even more. What I really appreciated here is that you can find 1,000 mph hardcore bands like Napalm Death or Extreme Noise Terror as well as melodic punksters of Joyce McKinney Experience or Sofa Head. So, don´t let the title "UK Hardcore 1985-1989" fool you: it´s not only hardcore, but also punk. Also, it´s not only UK, but also Ireland (Republic of Ireland, don´t think was ever part of the UK, let alone between 1985 and 1989). And, it´s not only 1985-1989, because there´s a photo of Decadence Within from 1994 for example or other photos from earlier than 1985. So, the book sticks to the title only in part.
I really appreciated the fact that there are interviews with record labels of the time and also plenty of photos and flyers to illustrate that time between 1985 and 1989 in the UK.
All in all, a long read that sheds more light on that time and place. For the amount of work alone, I couldn´t give it less than 4 stars, because it would have been unfair. ...more "
