“Your face, your mouth, your shoulder
inconceivable to me now!
Where did they go? It’s like
I dreamed them. The stones we brought
home from the beach lie face up
on the windowsill, cooling.
Come home. Do you hear?
My lungs are thick with the smoke
of your absence.”
― Raymond Carver

“Years later,
I still wanted to give up
friends, love, starry skies,
for a house where no one
was home, no one coming back,
and all I could drink”
― Raymond Carver, Fires: Essays, Poems, Stories

“Life is beautiful, so long as it is consuming you. When it is rushing through you, destroying you, life is glorious. It is best to roar away, like a fire with a great draught, white-hot to the last bit.”
― D.H. Lawrence, A Modern Lover

“It's seldom anything turns out to be better than you expected it to be. Usually it's the other way around.”
― Raymond Carver, Harry's Death
