Like obviously I remembered everything that is also in the movie, because I have seen the movies SEVERAL times, but all of the stuff that is unique to the book felt very new. Like I noticed that Katniss actually mentions Johanna and I didn't remember that AT ALL. So yeah - I'm even more excited to be doing a reread.

And this reread has confirmed what I already knew - while I may not feel that this series is perfect, this first book is pretty damn near perfect. AND I was reminded that the movie is one of the, if not THE best, adaptations of a book ever, because moving into the movie genre we kind of HAVE to lose Katniss's inner monologue and that hurts, because as I was reading the book I was reminded of how great it is. Jennifer Lawrence does a good job of portraying a lot of it on her face, but there's only so much you can do. And while I remember becoming slightly annoyed with Katniss in the next two books, in this book she is just perfect. Her thoughts about Prim and Rue just making me love her and her inability to even begin to think about any romantic feelings she might have for Gale or Peeta, it just makes her so endearing. AND we get to see some of her fire as well. The moments where she admits to herself that she isn't just ready to kill the careers, but that she's looking FORWARD to it (after Rue's death in particular), and the hatred she starts expressing toward the Capital. It's just all. so. good.

But back to what makes the movie such a good adaptation - YES - I miss this inner monologue, but we get something SO GOOD in exchange, and that's the behind the scenes of the Hunger Games, which we can't get in the book since it is told from the 1st person. We get Katniss' IMAGINING what Haymitch is trying to tell her and how he's trying to help her, but in the movie we get to SEE it happening. It's just so good.

I'm glad I decided to reread this series and hope maybe I will come away from the last book with more of an appreciation for it, because I definitely remember being a bit dissatisfied after my first read through. But regardless - I remember THIS book being great, and indeed it was! ...more "
