i will start off by saying that not a single character in this series has ever experienced a normal day in their lives. like omg it’s a new crisis every seven minutes. let them rest!

the characters are a lot more interesting in this one than the first. (i’m not talking about jude and anton my beloveds i would read fifty pages of them cooking breakfast.) speaking of jude, somebody get that man a therapist please i’m begging. he cycles through the five stages of grief like twelve times in this book give him a break let him rest. with that being said, the development of his relationship with anton is so beautifully done in this book. the way that they view one another is so precious they’re so in love it’s sick actually. i also enjoyed the linear arc between the development of their relationship and the expansion of jude’s character; i thought it was incredibly well done and expanded on the his established characterization in a way that made a lot of sense. the same goes for the development that anton was given in this book and the wonderfully written progression of his character arc. i will say that the foreshadowing for both of their arcs in regard to the final book did make me want to rip out my hair. i just love them so much omg i could talk about them for hours.

while i did find the other characters more interesting in this installment of the series, they still seemed to fall a bit flat. it’s very clear that this series is about jude and anton with the other characters serving as little more than plot devices to help move their story along. i do, however, still enjoy some of the plot lines that the other characters engage in, namely ephyra’s. she’s a very interesting character and i feel that her story arc is the one that strays the closest to something individual; in this book especially, her story feels like something disconnected from that of jude and anton—it doesn’t feel as though her actions are acting purely as a catalyst for the events that jude and anton are going to become engaged in—which did make it much more intriguing than those of beru and hassan. (this is not jude and anton slander i would never.) hassan was still the most boring one like i’m sorry but that man hasn’t been serious a day in his life but in a bad way.

the progression of the overarching plot line was incredibly intriguing. the reveals are good, although i will say that one of them was not like the others. (view spoiler) the end of this book was also very well done and sets up the final one in an incredibly compelling way. ...more "
