“We who sit comfortably, and when we have free time or feel like reading a chapter in the Bible, just need to pick up our Bible and open it wherever we want, tend to forget the hard work it took to provide us with that Bible in our own language. We also forget the dangers faced to give us the freedom to read it with our own eyes and hold it in our own hands. Especially now, when, through God's clear guidance and action, versions of the Scriptures are circulating worldwide in more than one hundred and forty of the supposed three hundred languages and dialects of the earth. It's rare to find someone who even thinks, let alone says, that there should be any limits on the spread of the sacred book. We are not well-prepared by our own experiences and feelings to appreciate the gift of a Bible that is now, for the first time, published in the local language. But Luther had to fight not only for the right to read but also to work, so that they might have something to practice that right on.”
