A page-turner that kicked me out of a reading slump. Understood none of the science, but the novel was fun and accessible regardless. I haven't read a 400+ page book so quick in years. The relationship between Ryland and Rocky was really nice and heartwarming. Somehow, Weir made a spider-esque alien seem endearing.
Emotional depth was kinda lacking with the MC and his other relationships. His crewmates were supposedly his friends, but they barely interacted and are pretty flat in the flashbacks. I guess this contrast was meant to service the unwilling-hero-coward plot twist, but that too, fell flat. It was an interesting twist that added complexity, but there was minimal time to really reflect on it. And in general, the moments meant to evoke pathos, didn't last long enough for me to dwell on them. Of course, he's constantly compartmentalizing his emotions for the sake of the countless crises going on, but eh. I still didn't connect with the MC much. The other characters, besides Rocky and Stratt, were just there....more
