"I can only handle this book (Sedaris too, probably) in small doses. It's exhausting. One second I'm laughing (as he likes to make himself the butt of his own jokes) and the next I'm bruised by how he catches me off guard with painful truths highlighting the human condition. I'll keep reading, as I feel myself to be more illuminated with every page, however uncomfortable it might be." Apr 25, 2013 09:03AM

Augusten Burroughs
“I used to feel so alone in the city. All those gazillions of people and then me, on the outside. Because how do you meet a new person? I was very stunned by this for many years. And then I realized, you just say, "Hi." They may ignore you. Or you may marry them. And that possibility is worth that one word.”
Augusten Burroughs

Alain de Botton
“We are all more intelligent than we are capable, and awareness of the insanity of love has never saved anyone from the disease.”
Alain De Botton, On Love

Emily Dickinson
“To hope means to be ready at every moment for that which is not yet born, and yet not become desperate if there is no birth in our lifetime.”
Emily Dickinson

“Even after a peak parenting experience, children never transition to a fully self-tuning physiology. Adults remain social animals: they continue to require a source of stabilization outside themselves. That open-loop design means that in some important ways, people cannot be stable on their own - not should or shouldn't be, but can't be. This prospect is disconcerting to many, especially in a society that prizes individuality as ours does. Total self-sufficiency turns out to be a daydream whose bubble is burst by the sharp edge of the limbic brain. Stability means finding people who regulate you well and staying near them.”
Thomas Lewis, A General Theory of Love

Emily Dickinson
“They say that God is everywhere and yet we always think of him as somewhat of a recluse.”
Emily Dickinson
