I give this book two stars because, much the same as Fourth Wing, the first half was SO SLOW, and it took forever for Violet to make any progress with either learning information or her signet training. And this is a big-ass book, so that’s a long time to be dragging your feet.

And then Violet pissed me right off with her whole “I can’t be with you (Xaden) unless you give me full disclosure” at the beginning. Because yeah, it TOTALLY makes sense for him, one of the head-honchos in the revolution, to disclose classified information to a second-year cadet. What an idiot. Honestly, just a cheap way to add to the word count and totally unnecessary.

Anyhoo, below are my thoughts on that lovely final chapter:

ARE. YOU. KIDDING. ME?!?!?! ARE YOU ACTUALLY JOKING?!?!?! WHAT THE FREAKING HECK DID I JUST READ?!??!?!? Like, you’re actually pulling my arm here, cos there’s no damn way I just finished this book with XADEN FREAKING RIORSON being a venin. Absolutely not. I’m dreaming. I’m obviously dreaming and I’m going to wake up and everything will be fine! Because WHAT THE FREAKING HECK?!?!?!

I’m not even joking, it took me at least two minutes of uncontrollable sobbing and heavy denial to read those last couple lines of the second-to-last chapter. Because I KNEW what Violet was going to see in his eyes. I FREAKING KNEW.

This isn’t real. This is an alternate reality or something because there’s NO WAY I live in a world where Xaden Riorson is venin. NO WAY. And there’s no cure, is there?? BECAUSE WHY THE HECK WOULD THERE BE A CURE TO PUT US ALL AT EASE?!?!?!?!

You know what, I hope Yarros steps in the biggest puddle of water while wearing socks. EVERYDAY until the release of the next book, because this is so unacceptable it cannot go unpunished.

I seriously cannot believe what I just read. And I was so keen to jump straight into a silly little romance after this book, but NOT ANYMORE. Now I’m gonna need the rest of the day to stew over this ending. This seriously can’t be real. I don’t wanna keep reading this series if Xaden is venin and they can’t cure it.

No, everything will be fine. Everything will be FINE. There has to be a happy ending for Violet and Xaden at the end. HAS TO. Yeah, we’ll be fine. ...more "
