“It just feels like for me contemporary romance focuses so much on being a page turner and memorable by being shocking. This boarders on romanticizing abusive love and toxic relationships, in fact a lot of the time it doesn’t even boarder on it it just blatantly does. The way that infidelity and abuse and toxicity is just being wrapped up in a big red bow and market it as a love story is sad and really dangerous. But what’s sadder is if a love story isn’t toxic or exciting enough to peak interest from generations so desensitized to these issues that it’s probably just not going to do well. We are so expectant and even aroused by these romantic ideals that aren’t ideal at all. That’s what we look for. It’s what we expect almost. I believe the genre encourages poor ideals around a very important thing.”
