Dylan, the older brother, is our narrator and he takes us with him as the boys move from house to house and their journey to accept what has happened to them.

The formatting is done incredibly well. I already appreciated it while reading, but afterwards, thinking about how the author has managed to craft this story is almost mind boggling. I truly have to tip my hat to Hayley Long. The typography is a piece of art in its own right and adds so much to the story. The font size of the dialogue represents the volume and the tone in which the words were spoken. The chapter numbers are printed at an angel, representing that off-feeling, the off-kilter feeling, of dealing with grief and the loss of people who were instrumental to your survival. It all adds so much to the atmosphere and general vibe of the scene and the story as a whole. It felt so incredibly immersive.

The big reveal was also so masterfully crafted. It took me so much so by surprise that I audibly gasped, freaked out my dog, had to put the book down and take a walk. The book truly needs a reread to pick apart all the signs I KNOW are there. It all fit in so well, I could never have predicted it.

I could never recommend a book more than The Nearest Faraway Place. It might just be the best book I have ever read. The characters, the writing, the formatting, the plot, everything was so incredibly masterfully done. The great classics don’t even come close. The epic multi-book fantasies don’t stand a chance. The thrillers and mysteries are no where near The Nearest Faraway Place’s league. This is so much so a must read, for anyone older than 10, it should be on any reading list at schools that offer English as a subject.

I am so thankful for my colleague for spotting this book and thinking it would be a good read for our third years (3 Havo in the Dutch educational system, 13-15 y/o). I hope they will be able to appreciate it as much as I have. ...more "
