We were introduced to a father and daughter, Gaffer Hexam and Lizzie, who are engaged in “salvage.” Clearly she hates it. They find all sorts of flotsam and jetsam in the river which sometimes includes those who had been killed or died on their own and ended up in the Thames.

In chapter we meet we meet the Veenerings. Once again Charles Dickens is playing with the names of his characters. This couple have a name that is close to the word veneer which is, of course, either a polish, painting or gilding to add outward attraction.
