supposed to ensure the success of the operation. But what attracts the crowds the most is without a doubt the social microcosm, the religious, miniaturized pleasure of real America, of its constraints and joys.

Psychology and medicine stop at this point, forestalled by the illness's henceforth undiscoverable truth. For if any symptom can be "produced," and can no longer be taken as a fact of nature, then every illness can be considered as simulatable and simulated, and medicine loses its meaning since it only knows how to treat "real'' illnesses according to their objective causes.

One of the disappointing aspects of this work is that it takes a really interesting idea, and proceeds to endlessly spew examples of it. The idea is not developed, explored and tested. Why has signification evolved into simulation? How does our understanding offer an alternative?
