Status Updates From Lo zio Silas

I think the reason I haven’t been enjoying this book very much is because of my expectations. I expected this book to be some kind of Victorian version of a thriller? but this book is closer to Jayne Eyre than Carmilla. My mistake!

is the world of this book scary? or is Maude just afraid of everything? I'm not really sure, and at this point I don't really care. When *everything* is spooky, nothing is spooky? And there is no real narrative pressure around a single spook? This book is dull asF compared to Carmilla :/

The most Gothic gothic novel that I have ever read. Genuinely creepy atmosphere. So far, similar to Le Fanu’s other famous work “Carmilla” with sheltered young heiress going for daily walks in cemetery with obviously malevolent older woman - and weird elderly father is oblivious.
