OK, I’m not sure how this one is going to end, but it is without question the heaviest and seemingly hopeless and miserable of her longer fictional works. 😰😮‍💨

Things are not adding up, and suspicions are flying! 😱

NOW we’re getting somewhere!! A bit of a slow start to this novella, truth be told, and I had a difficult time in places, trying to figure out where the story was going. But we’re in it now!! ☠️

Done the first three chapters of A Dark Night’s Work. An interesting setup—I’m curious as to where this will go. So much about the unreliable assumptions we make about the intersections of power, wealth, and class.

Finished Six Weeks at Heppenheim—what a beautiful short story that keeps you guessing all the way until the final few paragraphs!

Finished The Grey Woman—🤯😱❤️! So, so good, one of my favourite Gaskell short stories so far!!

First chapter of The Grey Woman done. Very strong The Mysteries of Udolpho vibes!! Loving it so far!!

Happily ever after fambly with Miss Monroe and Dixon included in the Livingstone household. Dixon gives his blessing--this one is better than the other ever was.

Tension principally cincerned with young Mr. Wilkins going downhill and not being responsible for his daughter/behaving selfishly.

End of first part. Does not end on very suspenseful note: Corbet has left for school and E. didn't say goodbye. Tension about E's father becoming increasingly more irresponsible.

Struggles over Dickens's editorial work, serialization repeated with "A Dark Night's Work" which was originally titled "A Night's Work" (x)

So she also had to leave the house. My favorite element so far is Ellinor's friendship with Dixon.
