This is such an interesting glimpse into a cosy late-70s masculine empathy fantasy. Tonic masculinity. Where everybody knows your name, but with a splash of x-files. I don’t know how prevalent this mentality was at the time- enough in some circles to win the Hugo I guess. I haven’t run into anything problematic yet and hoping it stays that way, but I like it so far.

One of the earliest books I added in my tbr lol, always thought this was a tavern in space, but of all places its set in Suffolk County. Looked up the author and he passed out of Stony Brook!

There's an ethical chord being played throughout what I've read so far that has reminded me why this era of science fiction is my favorite. It isn't preachy, it isn't "Sci-Fi" - it's just real. It's human.
