Status Updates From The Journey to Allah

"Hence that person would be deserving of punishment."

On the Day of Judgment, we will be held accountable for the blessings we received. If we fail to show gratitude or misuse these blessings, it is only fair that we deserve punishment because we did not fulfill our responsibility as Allah’s servants.

"...Did they show gratitude for them or not?"

Gratitude, in this context, means acknowledging these gifts as coming from Allah, using them in ways that please Him, and not misusing or neglecting them.

“One cannot be patient when You are afar,
When to closeness is he familiar.
From You one cannot suffer being veiled,
When in love is he immersed.
Even if the eye does not see You,
For sure the heart beholds You.”

‘Ibn Mas’ūd said to his companions, ‘You fast and pray more than the Companions of Muhammad ﷺ but they were better than you.’ They asked, ‘How so?’ He replied, ‘They were more abstinent of this world than you and more desirous of the hereafter.’ - Ibid., Vol. 1 p. 136

‘Wahb ibn al-Ward, when asked about the reward of a particular deed, said, ‘Ask not about its reward, but ask about the gratitude due upon one who was guided to it.’ - Abū Nu’ayn, vol. 8, p. 155

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said “The deeds of any one of you will not enter him into Paradise or save him from the Fire, not even me unless it be through the mercy of Allah”. Muslim #2816-7121
