Genuinely confusing at times. After finishing volume 1, here are my general thoughts:
Ambrosio the saint is a prideful hypocrite, Baptiste the friendly woodsman is a murderer, Marguerite the unpleasant wife is the moral center of her scene. Nobody is what they seem, and the institutions meant to enforce virtue (the Church, the monastery, the convent) are where the worst corruptions fester.
