Just when I think one of the authors of these chapters will be less tedious, I'm wrong. I will admit to skimming now as I wish to finish this before departing for the actual city.

This book is disappointing. So far it has managed to take the history of York and turn it into a tedious slog of archaeological details. The authors (P. Nuttgens is the editor, not sole author) need to learn how to use commas and the page numbering is weird. Sometimes pages with illustrations/pictures are numbered, sometimes not. Weird. Trying to plow through this & finish it quickly.

This is much more scholarly than I had expected. While I appreciate knowing where EVERY Roman ruin is in the York area, I don't really need to know exactly how big the bath is, the manor house, etc, down to the exact meters and all that. This will take FOREVER to get thru if it doesn't pick up.
