Sooo. Victorian lovers sent enciphered messages to one another via agony posts in newspapers. At the same time, a whole bunch of amateur cryptoanalysts tried to break them for fun. Omgaaaah. The chaos.

This is FUN. I’m loving the mix of history, mathematics, diplomacy, statistics, science, geopolitics, and theology. How can we know if Soro is lying about not being able to break the Pope’s cipher? I need to know.

I’m only a couple of pages into chapter one and already I’m bemused. There’s a guy who shaved his head, had message written on it, grew his hair out, went to meet the recipient, and finally shaved his head to deliver the message. Jokes.
