Hutchinson places Lever on the backdrop of the social history of Lewis, as a way of explaining why he failed there. I think it is a little harsh on the Wee Soap Mannie - because the appraisal does NOT take into consideration one of my principles of historical research: look at a situation through the eyes of the time, not with the benefit of hindsight or from today's perspective.
