I get the appeal of reading taboo subjects. If I had never explored the subject of pedophilia before than maybe this would've captivated my attention.
For instance there's this interview online of a woman whose father was a pedophile. She was trying to humanize him, has started support groups for family members of pedophiles

He's giving her champagne and bought her lingerie
tbh I'm not sensing there's a lot of depth or insight to this, the same ol' story you hear about. Neglected child falls prey to an opportunistic pedophile, later has emotional/psychological damage

I'm not going to finish this book.
From the reviews the author attempts to make this guy sympathetic.
I'm for taboo and pedophilia is a taboo. I'm over the exploring how society should sympathize with pedophiles conversation

I didn't realize this book was so overtly sexual. This is giving major pedophilia vibes. Tbh I'm grossed out. And there's a difference between a 14 year old and 17/18 year old. 17/18 year olds still don't have fully developed brains but 14 year olds are children.

It's heavy.
It's not a fun taboo.
It's not the kind of depraved taboo where you get caught up in the adrenaline rush of the story.
It's emotionally heavy

Someone (some podcast I can't remember) talked about how in history - it's only been relatively recently considered taboo for men to be sexual with young women under 18.
In reality I think more men are attracted to young teenagers than they admit - the massive profits that come from teenage porn speaks to the demand

I'm going to have to DNF this
At least with LOLITA the prose is stunning, almost a distraction from the content.
The writing here is good - great characterization, but it's too serious. Not any dark humour to off set the subject matter

going to take a little break from this primordial force that is Nick, his "great-fuck" Lia, and his "steady-lay" her mother because they are under my skin and as a reader there is nothing I can do to make Lia stop destroying her life, or inject Nick with feelings that go beyond the hedonism and survival instincts he lives by.

Now I'm ready to shake Olivia. To be so desperate for physical contact (I'm being polite here) that you lose not just dignity and self-esteem, but basic sense -- wow. And Inglis makes all of this surreal stuff horrifically believable.

"He was staring at her, his eyes opaquely intent, as if he couldn't see anything but her, yet couldn't really see her at all. The way the witch might have looked at its victims before it ate them up. Just for that instant, Olivia was terrified."
It kills me that the the author, who wrote this magic, has measly 200 ratings on goodreads while the shitpiles in this genre get thousands even million. WTF.

even better on the second read. the way Janet Inglis writers characters is phenomenal. I don't remember last time or if ever loving a teen girl character. My heart goes out to all the Olivias out there. I wish I could hug them and protect them since their parents have failed them. That said--and this is the twisted part--I love Nick too.
