The writing style is intimate and captivating. Favorite quote so far is “Eventually he stopped talking to the iguana altogether because he came to enjoy and trust the silence between them as if the two of them were buddies in an old-time silent movie.”

I really want to hate this book and fling it in the fire. But I think there is a good story here, just hidden under a lot of endless stream of consciousness and unnecessary words that are nails on a chalkboard for me. Also not a fun family book.

Is there a point to this? I feel really bad for Kid. But really, this book needs a serious edit & / or abridgement.

This is not my choice of reading material. It was chosen for the "52 Award winning" ALA list and is a family shared book. Otherwise, I'd DNF and delete it. It's probably a great book for others, but the constant sex comments puts me off. I feel badly for Kid, I wish he'd had better - or any - parenting and encouragement growing up, but not enjoying the book.
