I’ve noticed that Coetzee is intentionally vague about the race of people in his books, yet the very real themes of apartheid & colonialism come through clearly. Here, he paints a bleak, violent picture of an imagined civil war & people living in desperation & fear. His subject matter & writing challenge me in a way that keeps me. No wonder he’s a Nobel Prize winner & this book won the Booker Prize.
