It’s picking up again. I do appreciate that this author kind of gives you the illusion that you are maybe a half step ahead of the detective, which makes you feel smart and think you know “who dunnit”. I don’t read enough mysteries to know if that’s part of the genre.

In it for the somewhat surprising Jane Austen-related subplot.

Very put off by the way a witness’ story is being told “in her own words” but sounds very writerly, not natural. Not the way a person would imperfectly recollect an event. That and the slower pacing/longer sentences show how much has changed in writing style compared to a more modern mystery novel.

Getting twisty, but also feeling kinda long now… I don’t think I’ll read/listen to others in the series.

Loving how every chapter ends with an unspoken “dun-dun-DUNN!!” kind of a line. Not a cliffhanger per se, but a twist or suspenseful spin.

Enjoying the unexpected Jane Austen & Bath connections!
