Before reading Kahlil Gibran, maybe you need to read a lot of other things first. Not just books, but life itself.
Like, I happened to have read The Nightingale and the Rose before, so when Gibran brought up the nightingale piercing its bosom with a thorn, I actually had a reference point (at least shallowly).
