Really, the characters are 22 and 28? They don't behave like that. I thought they were a lot younger, like 18 or something.

Don't like how quick they fall into bed and love it together. lacks tension.

This world is suppose to be in an ice age but it isn't below freezing outside? Also there traveling until midnight when it is dark with horses? Not to mention indoor plumbing and modern conveniences in a post apocalyptic world. I'm so confused....

Sigh. So not in the mood for this... When Todd says to timid, inexperienced but eager, young Nick, "I'm not going to hurt you," and "Don't worry, I have experience, I'll teach you," all I thought was, "No! Dammit, HURT him," to the first, and, "Epic gag," to the second. Nothing wrong with the story, and I may ADORE it someday, but not today.

This reads like a Supernatural fanfic, with Sam as Nick and Dean as Todd....

Not liking this as much as I thought I would. All that "I'm a good master not like the rest of those slave owning bastards" vibe is giving me the hypocritical irrits.

My god, what is it with people. Your backup is there to back you up, and does absolutely no good to anyone if you tie him to a bed and then run off to get yourself killed!!! Where is a skillet to beat sense into these characters when you need one! Over-protection to the point of stupidity is not an admirable character trait.

Most exciting part of the books seems to be simply a side plot which is a shame since the ghost hunting is probably more interesting then the constant inner doubts of Nick and Todd. Good story as is, but it could be so much better.

finally we get to the spook aspect of the book!

I'm finding that in this re-read that it isn't the story that i find as interesting (though I am still enjoying it) but the world that the story takes place in. How did this place come to work with slavery, why did the laws of slaves come into place, in this mix or old and new what has grown and what has been cast aside? When you can own another person, what kind of responsibility do you put on yourself?

Is Nick submissive because he is a slave, 'cause he is younger, or simply because of who he is? It is an interesting idea--the "slave" vs "mate" choice; when you're mostly choiceless, is it really a choice though, when the choice is crumb or starve?. Can a slave really chose anything, or is it just an illusion put on by society? Are the little choices as important as the ones that are forbidden you--at leas for now

Is it that our civility and manners are a societal mask for the animal in us all--the mean, greedy parts that are held in check by our societies--or is it more that in this place certain things were let slip, bit by bit, till the rights and freedoms we knew as ours, disappeared to be replaced by this meanness, this coarseness of life and values?

Todd's dad is a dick. And I am unsure why freemen wouldn't be allowed to treat slaves. Even in the context of property wouldn't you be allowed to get your property fixed if it broke? Doesn't seem very logical. I like how there are still remnants of "our time" in this books, with lights, and roads and such, but still an old west feel to it.

I don't care anymore. I don't care about their "budding relationship." I don't care about the stupid wendigos they hinted at. I'm done. That's it. I'm rage-quitting and going off to reread Concubine for the umpteenth time. I can't do it anymore. I tried. I really did. I skimmed through a good 5 pages before I realized this wasn't going to work. I'm sorry, but I just can't do it.

This Todd guys needs to stop pretending that they can have a non dysfunctional relationship under such circumstances. (I'm not saying they can't reach some sort of equilibrium. I'm just saying that I don't feel like Nick, given his circumstances, can make genuine informed decisions on consent.)

It says something that Todd feels the need to justify his actions...to himself.

This bothered me before and it's bothering me now. Todd: "I care about you a lot, but if you want to have the benefit of my physical presence for comfort, you're going to have to wear this collar all the time. Only then will I even sleep vaguely near you, even though I know you suffer from nightmares." That, you guys, is true love...right? Right??? :-\
