eventually the author reveals that for him, democracy is the despotism of an elite of liberal lawyers and the ideal political system and the ideal political culture is one that allows that elite to flourish. The reader begs pardon to hope for something else.

Chapter six so far is actualy fairly sensible

First and so far only mention of de Gaulle on page 65. There was a paragraph I liked on page 75. Book is seriously marred by the author's total lack of interest in evidence to back up his assertions.

On almost every page I find something either very odd or disagreeable. I begin to remember why this book has spent so long gathering dust on my shelves. Scribbing criticisms in the margins provides only limited satisfactions. :-(
