A wonderful chapter on a pneumatology of gift!! It’s perfectly paired with the Lewis Hyde reading I’ve been doing for Faith and Pop Culture, and with my C.S. Lewis annotations that I’ve been revisiting lately. God’s plane of operation is just marvelous — that the giver and gift can be the same thing and that submission is ultimately something generative. Refreshing, exciting stuff that makes me smile!

Man, life as a Postmodernist must be truly dreadful. I think Steve is right that it’s ultimately dehumanizing, and what’s unfortunate (according to C.S. Lewis in The Magician’s Nephew) is that people who try to downplay the honest experience of their whole humanity often succeed in actually making it less than what it is. See the uncle’s experience of Narnia’s creation for Lewis’s much more blunt wording.

Frailty, glory, and becoming truly human. I love the non-competitive understanding of the Holy Spirit and humanity, that the Holy Spirit is for us the humanizing Spirit. I also thought Steve’s observation about the spirit/human dynamic in art was awesome: that often the things that make a piece seem most spiritual are the things that are actually quite notably human about it (34). That’s huge and exciting to me.

When Hendrikus Berkhof said, “All God’s deeds are inexpressible…. But all God’s deeds want to be confessed,” YEAAHHH. The recognition of mystery paired yet with the strange, ongoing desire to participate, to encounter something (or someONE), makes my heart soar! Like, somebody hold my hand because this is so personal. And that’s literally the point! It IS personal! AHHH!!!
