a fascinating read to bookend with notes of a native son – full of (dated) biases and some really gross passages, the description as a sort of reverse Gatsby is apt – it’s the faded man’s love affair and fantasy of youth

Really beautifully written. Lucky to have spent summers in Marseille and Provence growing up to have a memory I can attach to this prose. I feel like I’m at war with myself when I both laud and feel spiteful towards these male authors who write about their fantasies of dropping out of Yale and running to the countryside. I wish women could be their own characters instead of foils of/reactions to these men.
