Really interesting to see what Lawhon took from Martha Ballard's life and how to adapted it to write The Frozen River. I wish she'd incorporated more of the communal transactionary element of society, particularly amongst the women. Fascinating to read the real account of Ballard's life in her own words, vs the reimagined version Lawhon built.

Had to return it to library. Would like to check out again. I really liked it. It's an academic book but SO much wonderful information about the late 18th century and early 19th century.

This may end being my first DNF…
I really did love The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon, which is why I got this book. Knowing the nonfiction parts of historical fiction has become a sort-of obsession in recent years. I was looking forward to knowing the real Martha Ballard.
This book, though, is just very… expository.
