Book 17 of the challenge for me

GD it, Hughes! It took me thirty years to trust you again after The Crystal Drop, and you have the space dog shot! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?! STOP MAKING PEOPLE UPSET, FFS! There was enough potential conflict and misery set-up already - let's shoot the dog dead, just to REALLY piss off the reader!
Seriously. 30 years. I waited that long, and in a hundred pages she does it again.

Finally getting around to this!
