This has really fizzled out after such a good first half. Rubbish.

I love Sheridan Le Fanu, but come on. This story is just ridiculous. One moment it’s a Gothic thriller, the next it’s a comedy. It builds up one plot thread and then cuts away to a completely different one. It’s the worst of Le Fanu’s books I’ve read so far.

This is very proto-Jane Eyre and proto-Rebecca, and there’s even a touch of what Agatha Christie later did in Endless Night. It’s great! I have no idea where it’s going.

I am reading this to redeem my enjoyment of Victorian literature after North and South. 😊
