His fair hair was encircled with a thin band of gold. He wore a white cambric tunic with a bright red tunic beneath. His bandaged left hand rests on an enameled sword hilt. Then she recognizes Shasta (with a shock). The clothing and the new names means a change in identity! His old clothes were burnt! His father is King Lun and he and Corin are twins. DUH! Aravis apologizes for being a pig to him.

Two soldiers with halberds (ceremonial weapons) walk into the hut, followed by a herald and trumpeter (MERCURY). In walks the prince and the attendants leave. He gives a clumsy bow and Aravis curtseys very gracefully in Calormene fashion.

He tells her he was the only lion and the scratches match the scratches on the servant girls back. Aravis asks if anymore harm came to the girl and he says that’s not for her to know. He cheers them up with the promise of another visitor and leaves. They each go somewhere different to think and pace to and fro. Ninety minutes later a trumpet announces the arrival of Prince Cor. Avaris opens the door (to her future).

Hwin submits first, telling him that she’d rather be eaten by him than be fed by anyone else. He licks her nose and says that joy will come to her. There is no rebuking. He treats Bree like Thomas with a gentle rebuke: here are my paws, tail, and whiskers. Bree admits to being a fool and Aslan reassures him. She shows Aravis his velveted paws and she responds with respect, calling him sir.

Because his eyes are shut (blindness) and he was speaking in a superior manner (pride), he doesn’t see why the other two have dropped their jaws. An enormous, bright yellow lion has jumped down from the green wall (mastery over nature). They are frozen (dead in their tracks). Bree freaks out when he suddenly feels a whisker touch him. He runs to a wall and turns to look. The other two back up.

Ch. 14 The magic mirror doesn’t reveal what is said so they stop watching. Hwin wants to go to Narnia but Bree is ashamed of his tell. Aravis feels like a fifth wheel. Aravis suggests they visit Shasta so she can apologize for being a jerk. She asks Bree about the Lion and he admits he’s ignorant. However, he’s sure that Aslan can not be a beast: the lion is an image of strength and courage (what Bree lacks).

Corin runs to his father with Shasta and introduces them. Lune fusses at Corin but he really is proud of his son. Like father, like son. The moon is white. King Lune gives Shasta a big hug and kisses him on both cheeks. Then he shows the boy to the court and everyone cheers. Poor Shasta does not know why. We have a parent and child reunion. Woo hoo!!! The pure essence has been revealed. He’s a prince and future king.

In a dreadful, grand manner, he shouts, “The bolt of Tash falls from above.” The hole in his hauberk hangs on hook that holds a ring for mounting horses. He is left dangling like a ridiculous fool and all laugh at him because he looks like laundry hung out to dry. He demands man-to-man combat but Lune nixes it. Attacking during peacetime without provocation is traitorous behavior and he deserves a whipping.

When Shasta fell off, he thought he was a goner. After Calormenes either were killed or surrendered, it became quiet so he sat up. Then he heard laughter which is the first sign of ascent. I LOVE IT. This concludes the fifth stage! A giant tore a hole in Rabadash’s chain mail. When he was fighting Edmund, he jumped on a mounting block (for horses). He realized he was a target for arrows so he jumped down.

He doesn’t know how to defend himself with a shield and waves his sword wildly. He almost beheads his pony (a symbolic beheading). Then he does down (symbolic death). They fear he is dead. The hermit calls hiim a brave fool. BRAVE. Calormen horses are either dead or escaped. The gate opens and out comes King Lune leading his men. They fight with vigor, too. King Edmund beheads a Calormen. A real beheading!

The hermit sees them as making the hillside turn black, coming out of Stormness (another image of black). Then he sees the red lion. In a way Edmund is a red king and Lucy, a white queen because she is a white barbarian to Calormen eyes. The hermit is shocked to see two children that look like two peas in a pod. Prince Corin (who is well-trained and fighting like man) kills a Calormen. Shasta is the opposite.

Shasta is so confused (darkness) that the hermit’s point of view is shared because the pool is a magic mirror (Galadriel). Since Aravis and the horses could not see the images clearly, the hermit narrates to them. He sees three eagles (one is the elderly king). Prince Rabash is the one barking out orders as the black king. The hermit comments on the foolish decisions he made. The Narnian’s arrival scares the birds.

Even Corin looks serious. There is no moat (dry). The Calormen army drop the ram, mount horses, and line up. Both sides races towards each other. Shasta is frightened and a sign of that is a dry mouth. He acknowledges his fear which has always driven him and this time he does not run. He faces his fear. In the confusion and noise (darkness), Shasta is disarmed by the confusion and slips off his horse.

Cats (leopards and panthers -- images of gold and black) are on the left and giants with spiked boots and clubs are on the right. Archers are in back testing their strings. Everyone feels solemn and dreadful (dark feelings). This is not an exuberant, careless march to victory. They hear the thudding of a battering ram hitting the gate/portcullis of the castle. Prince Rabadash is the black king (Tash is a vulture).

Ch. 13 Shasta and Corin ride in the back of the line together. The height makes Shasta shudder and he knows that Aslan kept him safe. They plunge into the woods so he cannot see as well (darkness). Shasta sees eagles waiting to be fed after the battle (he doesn’t like that). He can’t see now because the sun is in his eyes. Both are signs of blindness. They reach an open plain and form up.
