I haven’t finished anything yet, I’m just a quarter of the way through the story.

War is hell…

Chapter 28 makes Lee’s personal views on the war, the politics, and the bravado obvious. It was clearly a more difficult and different time than many today are willing to accept.

Chapter 27. Continues to show the nuance that must be considered by modern-day historians, or wannabe historians For understanding, why people made the decisions they did at this time.

It should be clear to anyone reading these past two chapters (25 & 26) that Lee, like many of the people who ultimately remained on the side of the confederacy did so with no consideration for slavery, but rather for their allegiance to their home… their state, which was in the minds of the majority of Americans at the time, their country (similarly to the countries that make up the modern EU).

The 💩 is about to hit the fan.

The previous two chapter covering Lee’s time as superintendent of West Point makes it easier to understand how beloved he was by his officers and soldiers.

Way that last chapter wrapped up it sounds like they want to skip over 20 years from the Mexican-American war to the Civil War. I hope Freeman will give us some more background on the interim.
