Part 2/4: Allos' hardships in America as a Filipino dealing with unemployment and blatant racism. This had a very roller coaster structure where he can be doing well in one moment, the completely penniless in the next. There's also a LOT of train rides from city to city in search of jobs. Noticeable in his writing is he barely builds up pivotal moments such as reuniting w his brothers.

Part 1: Diary-like narration of hard family life in rural Pangasinan, written in retrospect. If this wasn't the original text, I'd think it was a modern translation with how accessible the language is.

Felt wrong reading this book without a great foundation of spanish colonial rule and the american entrance. Absolutely loved thus far, and can only expect I’ll love it more with a stronger background.
