A strangled sound traveled up Silver’s throat. “I take back what I said earlier,” he told him as he carried Nuri over to the desk and set him down on it. “You’re incredibly romantic. Don’t change a thing.”

“What’s it going to be?” Nuri tossed the N.I.M. an inch in the air and caught it. “Are we playing or not, Emperor?”
“It isn’t fair,” he sounded like a petulant child.

“I’ll give you whatever you want, Nuri,” he latched onto that, a glimmer of hope shining through. “If you don’t want Royal Consort, I’ll give you something else.”
“Do you want me to be Royal Consort?” the way he said it hinted there was a test somewhere in that question.
If this had taught him anything, however, it was that Silver was better off just being honest. “Yes. Yes, I do. Badly. So badly.”

Nuri made as though to pull away and Silver held onto him, refusing. “I’m only trying to turn around.”
The fear told him not to trust it, but if he wasn’t willing to trust Nuri, how could he expect to be trusted? Especially when he was the one who needed to earn it in the first place?

This was his own damn fault though and Silver knew it. If he’d only been honest from the beginning, if only he’d sat Nuri down when he’d discovered he’d wanted to resign a year ago and begged him to stay like he was begging him now…Maybe things would be different. Maybe he’d be more believable at the very least. “Nuri, I love you.”

“I’m sorry,” Silver said, the apology rushing out of him. “I was selfish. I was wrong. I’ll never do it again. Just please. Please.” He pressed his face against the small of Nuri’s back, only realizing that he was crying when the material instantly began to soak from his tears. He couldn’t even muster up embarrassment, still too overcome by the suffocating feeling of grief and loss and fear. “Please.”

There was always the option of tying him up and forcing him, but if the way Nuri was reacting to all of this was any indicator, all that would do was push the other man further away and that wasn’t what Silver wanted.
Without thinking, he clung to him, uncaring how he may come off or that he was groveling. If he needed to bow before Nuri even, he would do it. He’d do it happily if it meant he’d get through to him.

He’d thought he’d been uneasy, but Silver recognized the foreign feeling within him now

All this time, Nuri had foolishly thought the Emperor had been playing with him, when in reality he’d merely been playing him.
Completely forgetting that he’d been trying to keep it down, Nuri buried his head in his arms and burst into tears.
If anyone passing in the hall overheard his sobbing, they left him alone.

A set of dice was cast across the surface of the desk, the numbers adding up to five. Low.

Nuri fell back into the chair a second time. Silver had admitted to him that he’d known Nuri had planned on resigning after his crowning. At the risk of being arrogant, what if Silver had done this to force Nuri to stick around? It wasn’t too far out of the realm of possibility only because it’d worked, hadn’t it?

The Emperor tapped the tip of his shoe against the wood and then pointed to the four-poster bed set in the middle of the same wall where the entrance to the room was located. “Not many places use real wood anymore. Our room always had this particular smell to it that I grew rather fond of.”

Silver gave him a satisfied half smile. “No one has ever accused me of that before. You should know me well enough to know I’m only ever tender toward you.”
“Don’t do that.” He leaned away, brushing Silver’s hands off of him. “I’m already here. There’s no reason for you to ply me with pretty lies.”

Silver hummed noncommittally, still searching for potential targets. “I pick whoever looks the closest.”
“Closest to what?” Nuri tried to contain the spark of jealousy the thought of the Emperor having a secret crush brought him but failed miserably.

“That’s December,” Silver said at Nuri’s side.
“I know who she is.” Everyone knew. “She’s one of the most famous musicians in the galaxy.”
“Imagine how much more popular she’d be if she could master more than three colors.” Silver rested his fingers on Nuri’s elbow but practically had to drag him over toward the bar when that didn’t help remove Nuri’s attention from the stage.

For a split second Nuri had allowed himself to hope that maybe Silver wanted him but no. This was still about control. Everything was always about control to the Emperor. He needed everyone and everything around him to fall in line. Plain and simple.

Surprisingly, Silver laughed. “I’ve always preferred you this way, you know? Bold and cheeky. You filter yourself too often. It forces me to apply more pressure now and again just to get you to react.”

Oh they're actually rolling pairs of dice and seeing who gets a higher total. I actually thought they were flipping a coin I'm so stupid. Best way this can go, Nuri loses the first two but WINS the last one and CHOOSES to stay.
