Beginning to feel like I'm part of the scene in Barcelona. The aftermath of the Spanish Civil War permeates the novel---trauma continued well after the war even today as it informs Ruiz-Zafon's work.

A real rollercoaster of a ride! Sometimes laughing, other times practically crying, often on the edge of my seat and even yelling at the characters!

Spanish literature has certainly come into its own since the death of Franco who ruled Spain with an iron fist between 1939 and 1976 after usurping a democratically elected government. Literature suffered during his dictatorship and his henchmen murdered Federico Garcia Lorca, a world famous playwright and indirectly caused the deaths of Miguel de Unamuno and Antonio Machado. The novel resonates with the aftermath.
