Black returns battered and bloodied to the home in which he was hiding Shekure and the children and takes them back to Enishte’s. Convinced Black is going to die, Shekure commits a sexual act she had refused days before, which seems to miraculously give him new life. He lives another twenty-six years in melancholy not quite healing. Hasan flees Istanbul. Esther visits and shares the news of the murderer’s death.

The murderer is revealed, and the other three attempt to subdue him. After they blind him, he gives his full account and confession of the murders. Then, the murderer gains the upper hand and ends up stabbing Black in the shoulder before making his escape to catch a ship for Hindustan. After walking through the city, he is confronted by Hasan who kills him for possessing his ruby-handled dagger.

The trio make their way to Olive’s place of hiding. What begins a search and an interrogation slowly fades into reminiscing on the miniaturists’ journey together from apprentices to masters.

Black and Butterfly interrogate Stork. After Stork adequately convinces them he is not the murderer, the trio make their way to the dervish lodge where he believes Olive is hiding.

They go together to Olive’s home, but he is away. As they search through his things, they discover a horse painting that was undoubtedly rendered by Stork.

After the raid of the coffeehouse, Black attempts to take Butterfly hostage to his home to question him. Butterfly is able to turn the table and pin Black to the ground. After Butterfly relishes in the resemblance of this moment to illustrations of violence he has beheld but before he murders him, Black reveals Osman’s intentions of denouncing the miniaturists.
