Feel like I’m getting bogged down by details about the founding of monasteries and churches and social structures. Not that it’s not good information, just feels like it would be better digested intermixed with the main narrative.

I find it interesting that it feels like, despite roughly 200 pages, the first 800 years of Venice is pretty rushed. I feel like I’ve read other books on Venetian history with fewer page counts that manage to convey much more of the time period before 1300 with more description of events and personalities. I think it might have worked better if the author had done it in 5 parts, giving more time to 976-1300’s.

Good so far, but seems like we got to 1204 very fast.
Author is in complete command of the history, but does over explain and jump back and forth on some events to maintain cohesion with earlier points.
