I find King Lear to be one of the most genuinely complex plays in the Shakespeare canon. The division of characters according to morality or righteousness isn't exactly irrelevant, but it often seems beside the point, which is to illustrate the sheer blind destructiveness of pointless intergenerational conflicts. There is plenty of sympathy and contempt to go around.
