The setting of this book is 1922 which is important in London. Mrs. Wilkins is an unassuming and unhappy housewife who sees an advertisement about renting a mediaeval Italian Castle on the shores of the Mediterranean to be let Furnished for the month of April. She talks Mrs. Arbuthnot, a member of her church, into renting it with her. They used their rainy day money without their husbands knowledge.
