Now, now. Come upstairs and tell me what the comrades are doing now that history has ended.

MAX...I'm not allowed the Neurofen with alcohol.
ESME Pa
MAX That's what the doctor said.

MAX I thought about voting for Thatcher.
ESME Why?
MAX To keep the issues in plain sight. Sharp enough to cut. Draw blood. Widen the gap and rub the workers' faces in it, reward the fat and the smug. Anything to wake the buggers up-anything anything better than five years of amelioration and accommodation calling itself the Party of Labour. But I voted for them.

I'd put you up against Socrates. Your lack of education has made you impregnable.

FERDINAND (excited) I'm telling you, the trial
stripped the system naked, Jan, and held it up so plain you felt almost sorry for the prosecutor. The absurdity rose and rose till it covered his head and the judge's head... but they were trapped in the ritual. Going away from the court afterwards Havel said to me, 'Ferda, from now on being careful seems so……. petty.’

(pleasantly) Good. And, Lenka, don't try to shag my husband till I'm dead, or I'll stick the art of motorcycle maintenance up your rancid cunt, there's a dear.

[MAX] If mental is separate from physical, how does it
make Sappho go hot and cold and deaf and blind at lunch?
LENKA I don't know. Sappho didn't know why things fall to the floor. So what? They fell anyway. She looks down the table and she is in love separate from her body. (She plays her trump.) If it's an illusion, who's having it?

The policeman isn't frightened by dissidents! Why should he be? Policemen love dissidents, like the Inquisition loved heretics. Heretics give meaning to the defenders of the faith.

The little diddums! - still sucking on philosophy's tit! For you, freedom means, 'Leave me alone.' For the masses it means, ‘Give me a break.'
He puts on his coat etc.
Social relations are economic, as I thought we'd agreed at Cambridge. You, me and Marx...

If I was English I wouldn't care if Communism in Czechoslovakia reformed itself into a pile of pig shit. To be English would be my luck. I would be moderately enthusiastic and moderately philistine, and a good sport. I would be kind to foreigners in a moderately superior way, and also to animals except for the ones I kill, and I would live a decent life, like most English people.

so I said in England anyone
could live anywhere they liked, even if
they had two legs. My mother was
questioned and she lost her job at the
shoe factory, but the point is the
other kids in the class. They thought I
was telling travellers' tales. They
couldn't grasp the idea of a country
where someone, anyone, could
decide to move to another town and
just go there.
